Prague 10 - Skalka
THE CALL: Why start a new church?
THE CALL: Why start a new church?
THE CALL: Why start a new church?
THE CALL: Why start a new church?
Since 1996, we have had the privilege of working alongside gifted and capable Czech and missionary co-workers in establishing three new churches in Prague:
- 1996 - 2000 Opatov-Šeberov church
- 2001 - 2005 South City (Háje) church
- 2006 - 2010 Prague 10-Skalka church
These experiences have confirmed our call and the vision to continue the work of church planting and evangelism in the Czech Republic, probably the most atheistic nation in the world. The best way to reach a community for Jesus Christ is to establish a new local church in that place.
THE FOCUS: Who do we want to reach?
TEAM’s vision in the Czech Republic is “to work together with Czech believers to establish culturally relevant, reproducing churches to the glory of God.” Beginning in the fall of 2006, we began outreach in the 10th district of Prague, home to 115,000 people with almost no evangelical church in that region.
The Skalka neigborhood in the 10th district of Prague is a densely-populated area of high-rise apartment complexes, home to 22,000 people and with no other established Christian witness except for CB Skalka.
Just steps from the Skalka subway station is the CB Skalka church plant, the focus of our church planting efforts since 2006, and the spiritual home of a growing community of new Czech believers.
THE LINKS: What kind of church is it?
Just as the Opatov-Šeberov church “gave birth” the South City Church in Háje, the new CB Skalka church in Prague 10 is a “station” or daughter church of the South City Church, of which Mark is still an elder. It is part of the Czech Church of the Brethren, the largest and strongest evangelical group in the Czech Republic, with 73 churches and 6500 believers in the Czech Republic. In May 2010 Mark was ordained as a pastor in this denomination, which is TEAM's Czech partner for church planting.
THE PLAN: How is this church being established?
By God’s grace we began with the contacts that we already had in the 10th district and we worked from there. After renting space in a strategic location at the Skalka subway station in Prague 10, we began offering evangelistic English and Bible classes along with other various outreaches based on the needs of the people in the community. At present, CB Skalka is reaching out with:
- outreach-based Sunday services
- conversational English classes
- chronological Bible classes
- discipleship and leadership training
- children's club with English teaching
- mother's club
- seniors' club
- teen club / youth group
- small-group Bible studies
- conversational book reading club
- Alpha Course: basics of Christianity
- the Marriage Course
- summer family English Camps
- baseball club, summer sports camp
- women's craft evenings
- tea room, seminars, guest speakers
CB Skalka is discipling new believers as they come to faith in Christ while at the same time training and mentoring new Czech leaders.
THE PEOPLE: Who is forming this church?
We prayed for a core group of new believers to form the nucleus of this church plant, and over the course of four years, several new Czech believers were baptized and joined our fellowship. We were also joined by our TEAM co-workers Pat Foster and Larry and Michelle Davies, plus short-term workers from North America. Petr Sedy serves as the outreach worker for CB Skalka along with his wife Mirka, and several Czech believers now form the core group, gifted and willing to serve in various areas of outreach and ministry. In May 2010 new elders were chosen to lead CB Skalka.

THE RESOURCES: How is this plan being supported?
We did not want the new CB Skalka church to be a financial burden on its mother church, South City Church, which does not have the financial resources to underwrite such a project. Instead we trusted God to provide the necessary start-up costs for the first five years from outside sources. Over the next five years our goal is that the CB Skalka church plant will gradually become independent of missionary help in the areas of leadership, finances, and outreach. We are grateful to all who regularly and sacrificially continue to contribute towards this project.
