Milovice
Mike and Sonja Bowden first helped to grow an established church out of another preaching station in the northwestern city of Podebrady on the outskirts of Prague. They employed similarly tested and proven strategies for reaching the sometimes distant and often untrusting Czech people. English classes, camps, retreats and music events have proven a strong way to build relationships. The Bowdens are currently helping to plant a new church in the small, but rapidly growing bedroom community of Milovice. “Milovice was a Russian army base that housed 100,000 Russian solders,” Mike Bowden explains. “The dilapidated high rise apartment buildings are being rehabbed into low cost housing for young families from Prague.” As a result, Milovice is one of the fastest growing cities in all of Europe; its population of 7500 expected to double in the next few years. Another small town, Lysa nad Labem, offers 8,000 people and is only three kilometers away.
The vision for the church in Milovice goes far beyond Sunday services. “Our very first core value will be Christ centered community,” Bowden insists. “We will pray for one another and the city as we will strive for relevant biblical preaching, teaching, worship and discipleship in all we do. We want to be defined as a group of believers so filled with joy and good works that even non-believers want to be around us.” September 2006 was the beginning of “Phase Two” for the Milovice initiative. To kick this off they sponsored “JoyFest 2006” an all day outdoor Christian music festival in the town. It was a great time for both adults and kids. Between 700-900 people attended throughout the day. In October the church signed a lease on a ministry center. Their present weekly outreach ministries include: English classes, a Karate Club, an English Chat Tea Room, a basketball club and an outreach to mothers (Milovice has the highest birthrate per capita of any other city in the Czech Republic.)
