Jeff grew up attending church, but when he was 11, he went forward in a morning service and received Christ as his Savior. This occurred after Jeff had been in the hospital for 17 days.
Lisa grew up going to church regularly but didn't believe that the Bible was true and that God existed. "I thought it was just another fairy-tale," Lisa said. But during college God worked in her heart and she finally realized that she needed His forgiveness and direction in her life.
Call
Although Jeff had been interested in missions since a young boy, it wasn't until he was 24 that he was certain God wanted to use him overseas. This was confirmed to him after a short-term missions trip to Bolivia.
When Lisa was 20 years old, she was on a summer missions project at Yellowstone National Park. Several students were asking God where He might want them to serve. "I was never really interested in overseas service, but I decided to pray anyway," Lisa said. "Almost immediately, I felt God was calling me to go to Russia. I tried to put it out of my mind, but God was persistent." At age 21, Lisa went on a summer missions project to the former USSR. Her call to missionary service in Russia was confirmed at that time.
Field Experience
Jeff's first term began with the study of the Czech language at a major university in Prague. During that time, he was involved also in teaching English and English Bible classes, planning and administering evangelistic English camps for junior high young people and entire families. There were opportunities to teach English in a public school, assist at English camps for high school and college age students and help with a coffee bar ministry as well as in a concert ministry.
Lisa was in Moscow, Russia, from 1992 until June 1999. She taught junior and senior high school students at Hinkson Christian Academy, a school for missionaries' children. Lisa and Jeff were married March 18, 2000, and returned to the Czech Republic in June 2000.
